Who sets the password?

Whoever opens the app first. TriliumNext has one password and no accounts, and it asks for it on the first visit, so open your app as soon as it is running, choose new user and set the password before you share the address.

Can I use the desktop app with my server?

Yes. Install the TriliumNext desktop app for Windows, macOS or Linux, choose to sync with a server on first start, and enter your app address and password. The desktop app keeps a full copy of your notes and syncs changes both ways.

Can I bring my notes from Notion, Evernote or Obsidian?

Yes. Use Import on any note's menu. It reads Markdown files, HTML, OPML, Evernote ENEX files, Notion and Obsidian exports, and Trilium exports.

What if I forget my password?

There is no email reset, so keep the password in a password manager. Protected notes are encrypted with it and cannot be opened without it.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. The web app has a mobile layout that works in your phone's browser, and you can add it to your home screen.

How are my notes backed up?

Your notes database is in our daily backups, and TriliumNext also keeps its own daily, weekly and monthly copies in its backup folder unless you turn that off in Settings.

Who keeps TriliumNext Notes updated?

We do. Curated updates roll out shortly after upstream releases and are tested on our platform first; security fixes move fast. If an update changes behaviour in a breaking way, we email you before it lands.

What happens to my data if I cancel?

Take a final export or SFTP copy any time before you cancel. After termination we keep your data for 14 days (in case you change your mind), then purge it, backups included.

Can I use my own domain?

Yes. Point a CNAME at your instance, prove ownership with a TXT record, and TLS certificates are issued automatically. Cloudflare-proxied domains work; if you use CAA records, allow letsencrypt.org.

Ask us to move it. Open a ticket from your control panel with the app and where it runs now. Support will tell you what can be moved and help you do it, and nobody touches your old app.
